ABSTRACT
The sociology of religion today is a field of fierce theoretical struggles. What is “religiosity”? How can we best do empirical research on religiosity? This presentation starts from different methodologies, qualitative and quantitative, presenting some respective findings about religiosity in Switzerland and Western Europe. The focus is on qualitative approaches and 'reserved religiosity'. Going through a deeper discussion of the different methodological designs, I will argue for a complementary use of quantitative and qualitative research designs with a clear distinction between methodology and theoretical interpretation.
