Dear Family! Dear Friends!
Happy Thanksgiving to all of you!
We have had great losses this year: our beloved Steve, our dear Liselotte, our Ingetraut, and others.
There is the question, if we can really be grateful after such a year of sadness?
However, three centuries before Rabbi Jesus of Nazareth, the great Socrates stated before his unjust execution in Athens,that death was not the worst, but the best, what could happen to a man or s woman.
There was a great reason for Socrates to hope, that death was good for one of two things: either death was a state of nothingness and utter unconsciousness, or there was a change and migration of the soul from this world to another.
If, according to Socrates in his Defense before the Athenian Tribunal, there was no consciousness in death, but rather a sleep like the sleep of a man, who was undisturbed even by the sight of dreams, then death was an unspeakable gain, because then eternity was only a single night.
But if death was the journey to another place, and there all the dead were, what good could be greater than this?
If indeed when the pilgrim arrives in the world below, he is delivered from the professors of justice in this world, and finds the true judges who are said to give judgement there, and who were righteous in their own lives, then that pilgrimage will be worth making.
What woud not a man give, if he might converse again with all his beloved friends In an unlimited communication community ?
If this was true, Socrates wanted to die again and again.
Ingetraut told her friends, that they should not be sad about her departure, since we would all soon see each other again
When your beautiful Mother and I started our family, we chose life, and that meant not only finite life, but also eternal life, like Socrates and the Rabbi Jesus of Nazareth.
Thus, maybe, we can be grateful also this year inspite of, or even because of all our losses.
We are sure, that we can be grateful for all the love which our family and friends have shown to Steve as he went on his pilgrimage.
We can also be grateful for the arrival in this world of our new family member: little Cecelia Grace.
We can also be grateful for the new House of Peace, which Karen and Bill made possible, and into which you are invited in the years to come.
Thus, lets have a wonderful Thanksgiving also in 2017.

Conference Venue: St. Bernhard in Rastatt (near Karlsruhe)
Sociological research on religion is empirically and thematically diverse. Since the classical authors, religion has been identified as a mirror and as a place of social change. With its integrative and contentious potentials, as well as its continuities and
discontinuities, religion is also currently a central object of sociological interest; it allows an exemplary reflection on social processes of transformation and stabilisation. This leads to multifaceted research on religious realities, both in European societies
and in other world regions. In order to highlight the relations between religion and society, the
Section on Sociology of Religion in the German Sociological Association (DGS) invites scholars to its VIth
Open Conference, to present diverse, empirically and theoretically oriented contributions from a sociology of religion perspective.
Research themes may concern institutional conditions and organisational forms of religious practice, religious knowledge and beliefs, the configuration of power relations in the religious field, religious gender relations, processes of professionalisation or
the diversification of religiosity towards popular religion and spiritualisation, religious movements, emotions and ritual forms or religious biographies, the negotiation of religious practices and identities in migration contexts or the representation of
religiosity in the public sphere. Contributions to varying topics and areas are very welcome. A special focus of the conference is on methodological questions; several panels will be reserved for the discussion of this issue. The conference offers the opportunity
to present and discuss different theoretical perspectives and empirical approaches (quantitative and qualitative) – and to network.The conference welcomes the presentation of current research projects and the discussion of topics that do not fit into the thematically
focused events of the section. Junior scholars are particularly invited to submit abstracts. The primary language of the conference is German, however English papers are very welcome.
Deadline: Please submit abstracts of 250 words (in .doc or .pdf format) by May, 31st
