BASR 2017 Conference – University of Chester – 4th-6th September
Panel Title: ‘Counter-Narratives in the Study of Religion: Scholarly Methodology and Religious Identities in Contested Frameworks’
Panel Chairs: Stephen E. Gregg & George D. Chryssides
This panel aims to bring together scholars interested in minority, muted, discordant, or controversial (purposefully or otherwise) religious communities and worldviews. Within the wider theme of the conference, the intention is to examine how these communities construct and enact narratives of religious identity, history, discourse or performance in their daily lives that may be discordant or counter-to competing narratives of identity. The communities in question could be smaller movements within larger groups, or minority groups themselves. The panel is open to a variety of topics, methodologies and approaches, but submissions should be related to an understanding of the chosen communities within a ‘lived religion’ paradigm (widely interpreted – focusing on people, not texts, and actions, not beliefs).
Methodological contributions are particularly welcome, including reflections on new or emerging methodologies which offer new insights into our subjects of study, but which may face challenges, or run counter to, existing established teaching and research frameworks.
Submissions should be in the form of a paper title, 200 word abstract and name and institutional affiliation, which should be emailed in Microsoft Word format to s.gregg@PROTECTED before Noon on 23rd May 2017.
